With the Alta HR, Fitbit has taken what was already a solid activity tracker, and made it better. It’s not flash, it’s not elaborate, but it is slick and with its newly added heart rate tracking skills it's a more well-rounded fitness companion for those looking beyond a simple steps count.

One positive to come from the reduced refresh rate of the heart rate monitor is that the Fitbit Alta HR can last close to seven days on a single charge. The Charge 2, on the other hand, tends to last closer to five days.

With the addition of a heart rate sensor, the fitness tracking component of the Alta HR is immediately above that of its predecessor. It remains basic in its capabilities, lacking many of the exercise and multi-sport capabilities of the Charge 2, however.
