The new Google Pixel 5 is $699, and it has 5G. It’s also a return to Google’s technology tricks: a great camera and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The slower processor means this isn’t a flagship phone, but it’s still quite good.

The Google Pixel 5 loses some of the more advanced features of its predecessor in order to keep the cost down, and the result is a streamlined phone with great camera software and a clean Android interface. But without some of those premium perks, like a telephoto lens, that appear in other handsets at the same price tier, the Pixel 5 struggles to distinguish itself from the competition. It's a good handset at a consumer-pleasing price – but that's true of other 2020 phones, too.

The Pixel 5 doesn’t pretend to compete with the most powerful phones on the market, because it doesn’t have to. It’s perhaps the most balanced Android phone to date, not to mention a great choice for those after a capable small phone, 5G phone or camera phone.

While the Google Pixel 5 improves much over the Pixel 4, compared to other top models, it remains behind in terms of technology. However, those who are looking for a compact Android 11 smartphone with guaranteed updates can hardly overlook the Pixel 5.

The Google Pixel 5 is a charming and reasonably-priced premium phone with an amazing camera and good battery life. But it's far less powerful than other options in its price range, and completely outmatched in value by Google’s cheaper Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 4a.
