The Huawei P20 is a phone we can recommend with hardly any reservations. It lacks a headphone jack and waterproofing, but aside from that is one of the best phones of 2018. It holds its own thanks to outstanding cameras, excellent battery life and the most premium design on a Huawei phone ever. It has a notch, but you can hide it in the software settings, making it no issue. At £599, we can recommend it alongside the Samsung Galaxy S9 – helped by the fact that EMUI is much less of a mess than it once was and the superb performance of the Kirin 970. Huawei just joined the top table of the smartphone world.

The follow-up to the P10 has plenty of high points, not least the camera and hardware, but the Huawei P20 doesn’t quite have enough to compete with 2018’s best flagships. It seems the much better P20 Pro is doing that instead.

The Huawei P20 has one of the best smartphone cameras you can get right now. The Huawei P20 Pro is even (slightly) better, but is 250 Euros more expensive.

A fantastic smartphone for everyone except those who will be happy to pay the extra for the P20 Pro’s additional optical talents.

That 5.8-inch near-edge-to-edge LTPS screen occupies over 80% of the P20’s front and features a resolution of 2240 x 1080 pixels. As such, it comes across as slightly sharper than the display on its larger sibling. As is customary for a smartphone in 2018 it also totes an unorthodox 18.7:9 aspect ratio, which butts up against the top edge of the phone’s body. This pushes Huawei to include a notch cut-out that houses the front-facing camera and earpiece.

Huawei fits a trimmed 3400mAh non-removable cell inside the P20, as opposed to the P20 Pro’s colossal 4000mAh power pack. Don’t let the smaller battery deter you, however; that’s more than enough juice to get you through at least a day and a half of intermediate use.
