With the P20 Pro Huawei has finally produced something that I would recommend over competitors regardless of the price. While not cheap, costing £800, in some ways you get a better experience than rivals costing £200 more.

Huawei's triple-camera marvel takes stunning low-light shots, but it’s not quite a replacement for the Galaxy S9 or iPhone X overall.

We review Huawei’s P20 Pro, a new flagship Android phone from China designed to compete with the iPhone X and Galaxy S9.

In the P20 Pro Huawei has delivered a stunning phone which should be on your shortlist along with the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X. Sure, there are some niggles such as the lack of stabilisation for 4K video, no headphone jack and no wireless charging, but if your priority is photography then the P20 Pro does not disappoint. Add in the long battery life, dual SIM slots and great screen and you’ve got the complete package: this is one of the best phones of 2018. It’s a fair amount more than the regular model so save yourself £200 on the regular P20 if you don’t mind ‘only’ dual rear cameras, no waterproofing and an LCD screen vs OLED.

Paying this much for a Huawei phone may seem a tough sell. But great battery life, top specs and some of the most compelling use of computational photography seen in a phone make the Huawei P20 Pro one of the most interesting handsets available.

There’s no obvious winner in this comparison and you might be able to choose solely based on whether you prefer Android or iOS. If you’re not sure, then Huawei is offering better value for money here with a much cheaper phone that has a similar design and some amazing specs including three rear cameras and 128GB of storage as standard. For some, it might be worth spending the extra on the iPhone X. It’s more compact, has Apple’s powerful A11 chip and wireless charging too.

The Huawei P20 Pro is wonderfully fast. The in-house Kirin 970 SoC at its heart, coupled with 6GB of RAM (2GB more than the standard P20) ensures the phone feels consistently fast and fluid. It handled every task I threw its way with ease, remaining composed while switching between a handful of applications and streaming a YouTube video over 4G whilst simultaneously running a 3D game using the phone’s split-screen multitasking functionality.

The 6.1-inch near-edge-to-edge Full HD+ FullView display on the Huawei P20 Pro is a pleasure to behold. It sports an unorthodox aspect ratio (18.7:9 in regards to the Pro specifically), similarly to almost every other smartphone that’s launched in 2018. Unlike its like-minded siblings, the Pro is the only member of the P20 family that boasts an OLED panel, however (the others use different forms of LCD). In theory, that means better contrast, deeper blacks, punchier colours and lower power consumption.

The Huawei P20 Pro sports a massive 4000mAh non-removable battery, which is more than enough to see the handset through at least two days of intermediate use – and it did on more than one occasion. I was unhooking the unit at 7:30 am and using it to browse Instagram and stream videos from YouTube and Netflix over 4G.
