Samsung’s smallest Galaxy, the S10E, proves that bigger isn’t always better and that it may be time for other phone manufacturers to start making tinier flagship devices.

With the Galaxy S10e Samsung has mostly managed to condense what is good about its 2019 flagship S10 line into something smaller and cheaper.

The small battery struggles to deliver consistent battery life and the S10e suffers for it. Everything else is top drawer: performance, build, display and audio are all awesome. The S10e is barely a downgrade on the other two S10 phones, even if it’s priced like one.  The size is wonderful and the physical fingerprint sensor is excellent. But if you want a phone with true all-day battery life – with no percentage watching – the S10e is not it.

The 'e' in Samsung Galaxy S10e stands for 'essential', which means it packs almost everything the S10 and S10 Plus have, at a lower price. You get a 5.8-inch screen, the same two primary cameras, and all-day battery life, but you’ll miss out on a third lens, the curved display edges, and the in-screen fingerprint sensor. That's the tempting compromise offered by Samsung's 'budget flagship' and answer to Apple's iPhone XR.

The cheapest member of the S10 family is an excellent alternative to its more expensive siblings. You must make do with fewer shiny features such as an in-screen fingerprint sensor, but you still get a flagship smartphone that delivers in the right areas.

Like the iPhone XR, the Galaxy S10e takes most of the headline features from its flashier siblings and offers them in a package that’s easier on the wallet. This isn’t a cheap phone – and it’s not trying to be – but neither is it an investment in the same vein as, say, the S10 Plus.
